How does one actually get a ripped track to the iPod? What application
or tool?

Amarok is what I use, I use it on my Creative Zen and it works beautifully.
It has a tab on the left for devices. You just set it up in settings and
hit "connect" to connect to the player, select the songs you want to
transfer, then transfer them. When you're finished, click disconnect and
unplug your player. Easy peasy.

That sounds good in theory, however at least on this box, the easy part is missing. Although the iPod shows up on the desktop - even has a cutesy little ipodish icon - Amarok does not see it, so the Connect button has nothing to do (yes, I mounted the ipod).

Must the track be in a specific format (e.g. MP3, FLAC, OGG, etc.) or
will any common format do?

What does the IPod read? Amarok will read all of the above plus some
others. You can send any audio format with Amarok, whether or not your
player will play it is another story.

I have proven that Amarok will _play_ most anything. But what file format specifically does the *iPod* expect?

I managed to just copy a couple of tracks to the Recordings directory on
the iPod, one each in MP3 and FLAC. But my sister found no way (whether
her ignorance or Apple's) of getting either of those tracks to play.

FLAC might not be supported. You might want to either read the manual for
supported file formats or do a search maybe: "Ipod <insert model here>
supported audio formats" to see what it can play. My Zen won't play FLAC or
OGG, but it will do MP3, the evil WMA and a few others.

A coworker had an ipod, we tried to dump some songs on it, but just with
windows explorer, the player couldn't find them. I assumed they had to be
in a particular directory, but I couldn't find any other Mp3s on it.
Amarok, should (and I'm not guaranteeing this) be able to put the Mp3s in
the right place on the player so they can be played.

Okay, I guess I first need to get past the hardware issue first. I.e. getting Amarok to actually recognize that the the iPod is plugged in.

I guess this whole process is so New Generation and common knowledge now
that us old folks can't figure it out.

Nah, we excel in what we're interested in.

Hopefully gaining this new knowledge will not lead me down yet another path for which I have no time. ;)
