iPods play everything iTunes does natively. Apple lists compatible
song formats here:

Don't worry about the "if you've got this version or higher" warnings.
If you've bought your iPod any time in 2007 or 2008, it will have
those version requirements by default.

MP4 and H.264 video, plus JPG and GIF images, are supported as well.
