iPods play everything iTunes does natively. Apple lists compatible song formats here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61476 Don't worry about the "if you've got this version or higher" warnings. If you've bought your iPod any time in 2007 or 2008, it will have those version requirements by default.
