This behavior is due to a kernel change in Linux. Why not try Ubuntu 7.10? AFAIK, it doesn't do any of the above listed.

Slackware doesn't do anything on it's own, you can only shoot yourself in the foot with your own gun. With all the commandline wonks here I'm surprised more people don't use it.
