Back to this thread's original thread, here's an example of where you might loose some time.

VNC server wouldn't start on a fresh install of CentOS 5.1; it complained about not finding fonts. Added paths to fonts to /etc/sysconfig/vncservers, then to ~/.vnc/config, but neither helped. Finally resolved by setting font paths in /usr/bin/vncserver (written in perl), as suggested by a comment in that file.
