This'll probably branch to the kooler real fast. :)

and then buying an iPod (and with the phone it's easier to put music on
it).

Assuming you mean copying files vs sync...

I see some people (usually unix geeks) say this a lot, and I usually chuckle. Speaking as one that has gone through at least a dozen mp3 devices from the original Diamond rio player (2nd commercial mp3 player?), CD-r based ones, and multiple flash and hdd ones up to a few iPods.. I find that just plugging in and having iTunes sync is FAR easier in the long run.

Yes, it means that you basically have to drink the itunes kool-aid and use it to manage all your music, but I've been completely won over to how it works and how seamless it is across devices (and I have a 80gig iPod, 8gig iPod touch and an apple TV now). Something that can keep someone like me happy, and that also works for my dad, my mom, and my grandparents (VERY difficult to get that last bit) has to be doing something right. Of course, not everyone likes the same thing (hell, I avoid windows, that's based on 20+ years of experience with MS products though, gah.. yes it's been almost 21 years now, feeling a tad old).

Then again, I've moved to OSX being my main OS of use at home now, and a MacBook Pro anyway... as much I like to tinker with Linux, I do more then enough at work and just want things to be simple at home anymore. Same reason I'm happy with HD capable Tivo's vs building a monstrous Myth setup. I just got tired of how much time I would put in (not necessarily fixing things, but trying to keep up with the bleeding edge features) vs just using the bits I really need. This is part of why I've mostly given up on gaming on PCs (that usually was fixing things though.. fixing windows, drivers, etc) and been won over to consoles. Being able to play from my recliner on a big screen TV with a kickass surround sound setup is also a plus. :)

I guess part of it is that when I was still learning a lot of the unix foundation bits.. doing more playing and tinkering at home was more fun and rewarding. Now that my base knowledge is very strong, and the types of things I'm learning anymore at work are more high-level and have less application at home, I'd rather just have the free time. Not that I don't get distracted with something new and shiny every now and then.

I totally agree with the phone + ipod vs both in one device though.. and I'd buy an iphone in a heartbeat if/when they'd put out a cdma capable one with 3g networking on it. I've had experience with GSM based phones, all annoying.
