iTunes at least is perfectly happy to manipulate your non-DRM music,
however you want to get it. Even services, like Amazon's mp3 purchaing can
integrate so that the songs are automatically added to iTunes.
As long as you don't buy from the Apple Music Store, iTunes can be just a
media manager.
Why would I want to purchase any music online? I have a ton of CDs. I
*had* even more music on my server (might still be there, don't know
yet). All I needed was a MP3 player I could transfer my already legally
owned music to. I don't need to pirate music online either (Though I
have thought about it. If there was a way to get the music free, and
send the musician/band that made it a few bucks for the song/album, that
would be great.)
What I should do, is purchase music directly from the various web sites
of the musicians/bands I like. More and more of them are getting away
from the studios because they are tired of being robbed by them
(exceptions are the likes of Metallica - Lars you SUCK!) and selling and
even giving away music through other channels where they can actually be
paid for their hard work.
The DRM crap that VCAST (and other services) use is exactly that - crap.
I buy it, I have the right to listen to it on any device I wish. One of
the many things that chases me away from Windows to Linux is DRM. I fear
DRM is expanding too fast.
