Probably not as high as the Buffalo can go. Typically, I keep it pretty low, around 30 mW. I only cranked it all the way up when that other WAP kept following me around. > > I guess there is also a health hazard consideration also, it there not? > Probably not until way higher power levels (I hope). Well, the tingling goes away when I get about 10' from the WAP, so I'm not really worried. Besides, I'm done having kids anyways... :) Seriously, it's not just the power output from the final amplifier that matters. It's also the kind of antenna you're using, and if you're running cable to that antenna. The little antenna on top of the Buffalo is omni-directional, and probably of zero or less gain. So for example if you could run 250mW out of the Buffalo, and the antenna has 3dBi loss, it's effective radiate power (ERP) is cut in half, or about 125 mW. Assuming zero losses in cabling, if you ran a beam antenna that had 14 dBi gain, it's ERP would be almost 4 watts. So, it's a balancing act when working on high gain microwave transmitting and receiving systems. Keep in mind transmitting gain also impacts receiving too. One thing I've been wanting to do is hike up Fortuna in Mission Trails Park with my laptop and a high gain 2.4 Ghz antenna and see how many WAPs I can find. I'm sure it would be in the 1000s. Some dude did a war flight - similar to a wardrive - in a small plane over San Diego and logged in the thousands. That was a few years ago. > > Regards, > ..jim > > > -- > [email protected] > http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list > -- Mark Schoonover, CMDBA http://www.linkedin.com/in/markschoonover http://marksitblog.blogspot.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-list
