My appeal was _not_ to Microsoft authority.  I guess what I was doing could
be described as appeal to overwhelming consensus.

But, if you look further into what I quoted from Microsoft, their
guidelines are based on research and usability studies (which they don't
give references to in the documentation).

Remember, I happen to think that much of the Windows GUI is very poorly
done, and quite unpleasant to use, not because it's a GUI, but because it
is clumsy and awkward.  But even they agree with everyone else on some
things.
