I've heard good things about OpenNMS -
http://www.opennms.org/index.php/Main_Page - but that also does fault and
performance information, service level stuff. I haven't used it yet, but I
do plan on it for a development project I have planned.

If you're looking at starting out with asset management, I would highly
suggest you also look at adding performance/fault management to the project.
It really doesn't add too much to the project, most network devices are SNMP
capable, even SNMPv3 too, which is something you might need. You can bring
in your servers as time permits, look at the Net-SNMP project.
