I've not seen that exact symptom, but I do notice that yumex has some strange interaction between cpu usage (high-usage; maybe that's just yum itslf?) and X responsiveness (low; including screen refresh, especially). Maybe it reflects some deficient python programming in yumex? On a lower-rank CPU, maybe sticking with yum might work better? Even on my AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ running F7, I often decide to limit my other activities while yum update is in process.
