I've seen this before on other machines but ignored it. On this slow
machine it's getting aggravating though; I have to babysit the process.
Any idea what the problem is and if there's anything to be done about it?

I've had the same thing happen in Fedora since at least FC6. It also
happens during an initial install of Fedora (Anaconda?). Very annoying
to have to sit and baby sit the damn computer while installing hundreds
of packages.
If you let it alone, it will eventually finish. But that may also be
hours or days later.
