FYI, to get the chat working we need to set a valid jabber server since the one set by default in the G1G1 is no longer up.
We could setup our own jabberd either on one of the OLPC laptops, or on something else on the network or internet, or just use one from Collabora. I tried the Collabora one and it does indeed work. Here's how you set your jabber server on the XO: open a terminal to see what is set: sugar-control-panel -g jabber to set it: sugar-control-panel -s jabber olpc.collabora.co.uk ctl-alt-erase(bcksp) to restart Sugar interface. You should now see a bunch of other users out on your network neighborhood view and if you start a chat session and share it, others can now join. supposedly, there is finally and "invite" indicator when you're invited to chat.
