If they are not open to giving Linux a try, then I wouldn't. That said...

Well, my wife and kids have been using Linux for some time (as has my sister and my mother). My two daughters use Open Office for school work when everyone else in their classes use M$ Orifice. The other night the older one complained about a lack of backgrounds for OOo, until I spent about 1 min on Google and found a plethora of them available for download.

At first they complained about Linux because it wasn't Windows. It has a different look and feel, and the applications are different. After a while, they found that it does everything they need it to, and with far fewer problems (aside from the user induced ones that you get on any platform). And they no longer get yelled at when I have to clean a virus/worm/trojan/spyware/malware from it because it doesn't get any.

The only two problems now are the printer won't work with it (FC7, HP 1400 series) and the machine is very old and very slow (it's a PII I think, donated by s friend's mom. The Athlon they they were using had the P/S go out and I haven't had a chance to replace it). Lack of money stops me from fixing that little problem. The printer problem is strange because it works fine with my FC8 laptop. When we want to print something, we just hook up the laptop and do it.

Is there open source software to shrink the Win2K partition that is 100% safe?

Open Source, no (not that I know of, and apparently Tracy agrees). Commercial, yes. I use Partition Magic when I need to do such things.

Can it toast the Windows installation?

There is always that chance, but I've never had it happen.
