I've been really happy with a slicehost.com slice. Basically you rent a xen instance, so it's like having a colo host of your own without buying the hardware. No worries about stupid control panels and do whatever you want on the box really. Pick the distro to use. Various sizes for ram, disk and monthly bandwidth allowance.

So the host that I've been using for the last few months really sucks,
they have horrible support and an almost criminal auto-upgrade policy
that you have to catch and opt out of or they charge you without
authorization. Today, I just wanted to add an A record to my dns zone
file and found out that I'm no longer able to manage my own dns since
they "upgraded" their control panel. I'm done with them!

Can anyone recommend a hosting service that doesn't suck? I use my
domain mostly for email, but like to have a web page for testing
purposes. Linux servers with LAMP are preferred, shell access would be
awesome. Low price is a must. Tech support should at least be competent.

Ok, go.
