It may be that "you can't get there from here". I found a gripe that
seem to be about just this.

..maybe you can pop the email (or forward it) to a more configurable
mail client?

Heh, how about HTML mail with the <pre> tag :)

Now we have a reason to use HTML mail; use HTML mail
with the <pre> tag to emulate old fashioned fixed width
font email.
