As I said later, what I really meant was UCS-2. You are right though that it handles chinese fairly well, although I think there are some characters in the "old chinese" space that require surrogate pairs. The good news is that they are mostly needed by people working with old historical documents, and aren't for example, needed by newspapers, people writing e-mails and blogs, etc.
