I would recommend an inexpensive router - $30 or so. 
That will add some firewall protection, and the
ability to use either computer by itself, without
requiring the other to be "up", and also not use
resources of the other box.

I personally like having a wireless router so I can
use my laptop anywhere in the house, and have both
desktops (kvm switch) cabled in to the router
