Time to consider wireless. Among other things, I'll need it when I build a MythTV box. Either that or a Cat V running down the staircase (the connectivity will be strictly for off-site programming through ssh).
I'm thinking a cheap d-Link hub and PC card for the laptop. As always, price is a concern. I'm open to recommendations on brands and stores. Later I'll need a wireless card for the Myth box, I suppose.
