I tried out MythTV on my 800MHz orig. Athlon box. Naturally, it was an extra box I had laying around (possibly of dubious quality), but I was disappointed to find out that this box did not be quite harness enough horsepower to use MythTV smoothly. I did try recording and playback asynchronously, recording without compression, check for dma on my hardrive, 256MB RAM, but still not enough to get smooth video.
That would be with encoding done in software (bttv based cards) ? If you used a PVR-250 card, your CPU hardly does anything
