You don't need to know the old usernames and passwords. All you need
to do is make a new password for root. Then you can do anything you
want to.

Two possibilities:
1) boot to single-user mode, which effectively leaves you logged in as
root. To do this, (assuming Fedora Core 2 has installed its usual
"grub" bootloader:

The boot screen will come up with the name of what it is about to do,
and some instructions. Most important is "e to edit". Type e. Then
you get a screen with two or three lines. One line will look
something like:
 kernel /boot/vmlinuz . . . rhgb quiet
Choose that line, type "e to edit" and add the word "single" to the end.
Note don't type the quotes.
Then type "b to boot"
The system will come up with a terminal-line interface, with prompt
# meaning you are the root user. Then change root's password
# passwd root
Password:
Changing password for user root.
New UNIX password: <your choice of password>

# type ctrl-d to boot to multi-user. Be sure to remember root's password
so that you can log in. Note -- hold Control key, type d

2) Use some other Linux distribution to "rescue" your installation.
Disk 1 from the Fedora Core 3 set will do, when it asks you what to do,
say "fedora rescue". Again, you will end up at the # prompt and can
change anything you want.

I think method 1) is easier.
