We've been using Apt for third-party RPM management, but as things
progressed, Apt for RPM started having more and more problems.
Eventually, it got so confused about dependancies, we had to replace
it with yum.
Let me go back to what was the original problem. It arises at Linux
InstallFests when people who have done e.g. a "Workstation"
installation of Fedora come back needing some more different utilities
installed, such as MySQL, PHP, Apache, Samba. Server-type stuff to
complement their Workstation.
Versions of Fedora prior to Core 5 had a method for installing
additional software from the set of distribution CDs. Because of
this, it has been the common practise at an InstallFest to say "just
install Workstation software now, you can add other things as you need
them, after you become familiar with the system". With Core 5 this is
now impossible without a network connection. None of the additional
software on the CDs that might have been installed at initial system
setup is accessible to a novice user.
I can see two possible workarounds:
1) install _everything_ first time. This is fairly time-consuming.
2) make a local Yum repository on the hard drive, composed of the
contents of the CDroms.
This could be scripted for ease of use, but would take the time to
read 5 CDs and the space to store their contents (about 3GB).
The Debian apt-cdrom system effectively sets up a transient
repository, keeping the references to the CDs online but not the
actual contents. I don't see how to do something similar with YUM.
Neither does the YUM website FAQ and Wiki.
I had thought that booting the Fedora installation CD in "update" mode
would allow installation of more software. It does not seem to do so
for me.
So I am looking for suggextions.
