The wireless card to slot 4 from slot 1, the sound card to slot 1 from
slot 3. This did nothing to change the problem. Sound works fine,
newtwork card works fine, but the network just won't respond when the
sound card is active.

Define "active". Wifi driver is my closest guess here, too. What does the Ubuntu hardware wiki say about this one?

"Active" means anytime the sound card has been tasked to play any sound. Typically trying to play a CD or a music file. If I try to play a tune off the internet, I get about one note and then the browser hangs.

The wiki hardware info doesn't show support for the wmp11. However, the system discovered the wmp11 on it's own and loaded whatever drivers, etc that it needed without any input from me. The wiki hardware info shows support for the soundblaster live in 6.06 and 6.10 but nothing for 7.04.
