A Terminal window should work for those commands. You also can still get a full screen console the old way with Ctrl-Alt-F2.

Also try pulling out any other cards, especially those that we're sure couldn't be causing the problem...

Using a console in X Windows defeats the purpose of minimizing the amount of stuff running for doing troubleshooting.

Pulling other cards is a good idea, but it should be coupled with minimizing the number of drivers loaded.

Probably the best approach would be to turn off udev and boot into single mode, then load modules by hand. But doing this is way out of newbie territory and sounds like something for an installfest (no pun intended). Unfortunately, I won't be here for either of the next two installfests.
