I tried to send a follow-up to both kplug-list and kplug-newbie; somehow it ended up only in kplug-list (so look there for "Network mismanagement in Ubuntu 8.04"). There's also a related bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/211780 Still trying to hunt this one down.
