I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 using www.Wubi.___ on the HD of my (I'll explain)
Windows XP refurburbished tower, a vintage 2000 Gateway, I got from ACES for
$75 since I'm old & poor. They did a very good job with lots of applications,
monitor, etc., and free dialup internet. (I asked for a Linux OS, but, they
said "nobody wants Linux" so they don't supply it. I know the real reason: MS
underwrites some of their overhead, supplies them with registered Windows OS
plus applications, and essentially directs their operation. So, what else is
old, you ask!)

My question is: When I cold boot Ubuntu in AM, frequently I have trouble
bringing up Yahoo. I try again by doing a warm reboot several more times, but
the wheel spins, the AT&T modem activity light does not flash and nada. I then
reboot letting (explitive deleted) load and I get Yahoo with no problem as the
modem activity light twinkles away merrily. So, there's nothing wrong with the
internet connection, right?

So, once again I reboot but select U-8.04, and after starting Firefox, Yahoo
pops right up! So, does anyone have any idea why the problem connecting to
Yahoo under Ubuntu 8.04 at first?

Incidentally, I was tipped when 8.04 was in beta that I would be able to
install it directly onto my HD as a large file and be able to boot either 8.04
or explitive deleted and the latter would not be bothered. It really works
great (except for the above) and I don't have to play around with the live CD.
The download of 8.04 also went smoothly the very first time, a big surprise
for this newbie-retard, and it's so nice having Linux on my HD without trying
to do partitioning and possible screwing up the ACES agreement. Guess I can
heave the 5 old towers I've fooled around with the past 3 years. And, now I
can go back to those 6 salesmen at several computer retailers and tell them
they were wrong: There's no problem with Linux being too hard. Just draw up a
couple of cases of beer and I'll tell you how easy it was!!!

Looks like my Linksys WRT54GX2 and my Dell Latitude D820 refuse to
communicate over wireless since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04.
(the router talks to other computers, and the laptop computer talks to
other routers, but the two of them don't talk to each other, even if I
turn off encryption)
If I can't figure it out by Saturday, I hope one of you can try some
magic.

Christoph
