Any suggestions for quality home house wireless where the wireless doesn't work through most walls well? Currently netgear through the wiring setup, works, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for bettering it?
I have this problem since the plaster in my home was applied to wire mesh, essentially making each room a Faraday cage.
Some gain can be had by using a directional antenna, and the 802.11 wavelength is short enough to make high-gain antennas practical. Search for Pringles can, Cantenna, or waveguide antenna.
If you connect the AP to a directional high-gain antenna at one end of your house, pointed toward the other end, you might be able to get coverage throughout the house. I have had success with this by aiming the antenna down a hallway from one end of the house. The RF goes though doors just fine so it can get into the rooms with some signal strength.
Also, be sure the wireless cards you are using are set for maximum transmit power. Some can even be configured beyond the legal limit, but use caution as some have reported burning out the RF stage by doing so.
Another issue is the wireless cards you're using. Some are a LOT better at reception than others. In my experience, Airlink is particularly bad.
