I'd like to mention why I wasn't there after announcing my intention to
attend at the general meeting.

This is definitely IAGAS.

My primary purpose was to get help running DVDs on my laptop. I couldn't
get FC 3 to even find the sound chip.

Before bringing it in, I decided to do a clean reinstall of FC3. The
image on the laptop was an upgrade from RH9, and as has been frequently
noted, upgrades and installs ain't the same.

During the install, the CD ROM/DVD drive crapped out. It had always been
flaky, but this was total collapse. Fortunately, I had bought the
extended everything warranty (a _really_ bad laptop experience taught me
that machines w/o the warranty are on a high wire without a net). So it's
returning to the mother ship for a reunion with its parents.

Thus I spent the installfest time building a desktop out of my parts box
(with a couple of quick and blessedly cheap trips to CCC). Being without
a Linux machine at home is more than I can bear.

Interestingly, FC3 found the sound on the new box like a champ. So while
I can't yet show the kids "Mary Poppins" on long airplane flights, I can
revisit my Arnie and Bridgett Neilsen collection while I wait for the
laptop to come home.

I really want to support installfests more, as a helper as well as a
supplicant. But it was not to be yesterday.
