I want to do a quick post on the outcome of the SDMUG vote on leaving SDCS tonight. They're out. It was overwhelming, emotional, illogical, and never in doubt.
I made the case for their staying in SDCS as planned. John Alvarado (South Bay UG) was there, and he made an appeal as well. Some of their members asked piercing questions of their officers and expressed dislike of the way it had been handled. But in the end there was no stopping the separatists. What respect I had for Claude Mathis was ... severely strained. I can best describe his representation of the situation as duplicitous. He left the members with the impression that SDCS was stripping them of their wealth and that no one except SDMUG members had ever contributed anything to SDCS. I was proud of Gus for restraining himself (he only had to leave the room once to control his reaction). After all the years of effort he has personally put into the SDCS, it was beyond insulting. Rich Ernst also came to the meeting and can share his impressions. So Kplug is now the largest SIG. I hope we can discuss how we'll handle that responsibility; engage the other SIGs and nurture new ones; and continue the metamorphosis of SDCS into a service organization fills a need without creating one. Fortunately we have Gus who has been working on this and thinking about it for years. And we have jhriv and Josh and Neil and others who've stepped up when it was needed. So this isn't a disaster by any means. The talent's in place and the ideas are ready, I'm sure. But it's a little sad to see something like this happen. -- Lan Barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Linux Guy, SCM Specialist 858-354-0616 -- [email protected] http://www.kernel-panic.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/kplug-steer
