"Is anyone flying behind a Subaru engine?"

Clay,

I hopefully will be flying behind one soon so I will respectfully disagree with
Mr. Acklam. In my opinion, your engine choice is based on how you intend to
operate the airplane, what it carries, and your physical size.
If you are lucky enough to be Ken Rands size and you don't intend to carry
anyone except maybe a kid then build it to plans and put a VW in it and have a
great operating aircraft that costs almost nothing to operate. If you're like
me I was born bigger than Ken so that was never an option. I am 6'5" 205 lbs.
and I am using a Subaru EA-82T, which came after the EA-81, and it is
turbocharged from the manufacturer. I wanted a cross country time machine where
I could fly fast which meant altitude and a turbo to avoid the loss of power
due to altitude. We should probably take this discussion off line or better yet
come to the gathering. I will be there and we can give this topic a proper
beating up.

The EA-81 was offered by a couple of engine builders years ago and was commonly
referred to as a 100 HP engine. I would say that is at least 10% optimistic and
that is with a redrive so the engine can run at speed. If you are going direct
drive the HP will be a lot less.
