I'm using a JRC handheld with this type of antenna https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/antennasystems.php
I received it from the owner of the Tripacer I purchased in 1998. I strapped it to a cross member in the tail, vertically, with the top curved forward and the bottom curved forward. I can easily talk to aircraft 50+ miles out and regularly hear jump planes at altitude 80+ miles distance. No ground plane required. I see no reason it could not be "home made" for just a couple of dollars.
