Some have made the top attach bracket using steel plate. The top
bracket is basically a flat plate with a plate welded at a 45 degree
angle to mount the gear leg. An additional one or two gussets welded to
the side opposite the gear leg. Dimension to fit the spar with 6 each
1/4" bolts, three top and three bottom, centered on the spar caps. Wood
washers or backing plates to keep from crushing the spar. I don't
recall the width of the plate but I'm guessing in the 10 inch range. I
suspect that some math could work out the dimension knowing the height
of the spar and a 45 degree angle. A photo of the lower brackets at

that I made to replace lower cast brackets that were later recalled. I
used a piece of 1/4" X 2" X 6" 4130 steel. I used a hacksaw to cut
approx 3/4's of the way through at the 3" location. I then bent at the
cut to a 45 degree angle. The cut was welded shut and dressed, a gusset
added, and holes drilled to mount the axle. Diehl later replaced the
aluminum cast bracket with a steel bracket very similar to mine, just a
bit wider and rounded over on the bottom end.
I'm sure someone on the net can give more detailed info.
