Sam, Best to start with the "boat" by building the sides.
Yes, you can source a lot of it from scratch, but there are limitations. You can probably source wood (spruce, douglas fir, and/or pine) lumber and cut it up down 5/8"x5/8", but it needs to meet the specs for grains/inch. I did some research long ago to see if I could do it myself. There are several references out there that give guidance on what to look for. I ended up buying the kit from either Aircraft Spruce or Wicks. I could never find a decent source for the specified "plywood" for the boat sides other than Aircraft Spruce or Wicks. Plans call for 3/32" thick, 3-ply. I could not find anything at a "lumber store" that came close. If you are a scrounger - I'd say the best/cheapest way to acquire the wood/plywood etc at the lowest cost possible is to find and buy someone's old project that was never competed. You might get lucky and be able to use the materials and still be able to modify it as you desire. For all the builders out there, what is the best way to get started on building the boat? Is it 100% necessary to order a kit from somewhere (Aircraft Spruce, Wicks, etc.) or can the entire plane be assembled completely from scratch? I'm planning to build my fuselage approximately 6" wider than the plans call for, which I'm guessing will require heavy modifications elsewhere, so I've been trying to avoid a kit at all costs. Work has kept me busy for the past couple of months and I haven't had any time to actually start building, but I do have a little bit of time off over the Holidays so I'm hoping I can finally begin here soon. The start of a ~10 year process. Any info or suggestions you all have will be greatly appreciated.
