Recently while flying last Sunday my Bendix D3000 right magneto decided to quit
working on me. I haven’t pulled the unit yet however after checking with
several different magneto service stations, I’m looking at around $900 at a
minimum to get it back up and running, not including the shipping to the
servicer back.

This got me thinking if it would be worth it to upgrade to a dual electronic
ignition system and just remove the magneto completely. I received a quote from
SDS (Simple Digital Systems), and for a dual unit with spark plug wires it is
just under $900, which is almost the same as I’d pay for ignition, and it would
be a brand new, latest technology system. The only downside I could see is that
my plane could no longer run without battery power.

Another (more expensive) option I’ve considered would be to buy a single
magneto (slick 4220 for example), and a single SDS electronic ignition, giving
more redundancy. However the single ignition system from SDS is still $750 and
I’d have to buy a whole new magneto for at least $800, so it seems worth it to
me to just buy the dual ignition SDS system.

What are your guys thoughts on this? Any input would be appreciated.

Sorry if I made grammar mistakes, but I had 5 minutes to type this before work!
