Hi Sam, I went through this same situation with my plane a while back. I replaced the Slick mag, a non-rebuildable model, with the SDS system, and did so for the same reasons, i.e. new tech, similar price point. I had a lot of difficulty getting the wiring done correctly to allow me to perform a "mag check" to confirm the remaining mag and the EI. Many thanks to Jeff Scott for figuring out my wiring issues...
It cost me a considerable amount of down time, but the system seems to work well. I haven't put very much time on it due to other life issues. Were I to do it again, I would have spent a little more money and put in an e-mag. Much simpler upgrade, and not electrically dependent, and I would have been back in the air much sooner. My .00002 cents! -Troy On Thursday, April 9, 2020, 9:53:15 AM CDT, Samuel Spanovich via KRnet <krnet@list.krnet.org> wrote: Recently while flying last Sunday my Bendix D3000 right magneto decided to quit working on me. I haven’t pulled the unit yet however after checking with several different magneto service stations, I’m looking at around $900 at a minimum to get it back up and running, not including the shipping to the servicer back. This got me thinking if it would be worth it to upgrade to a dual electronic ignition system and just remove the magneto completely. I received a quote from SDS (Simple Digital Systems), and for a dual unit with spark plug wires it is just under $900, which is almost the same as I’d pay for ignition, and it would be a brand new, latest technology system. The only downside I could see is that my plane could no longer run without battery power. Another (more expensive) option I’ve considered would be to buy a single magneto (slick 4220 for example), and a single SDS electronic ignition, giving more redundancy. However the single ignition system from SDS is still $750 and I’d have to buy a whole new magneto for at least $800, so it seems worth it to me to just buy the dual ignition SDS system. What are your guys thoughts on this? Any input would be appreciated. Sorry if I made grammar mistakes, but I had 5 minutes to type this before work!
