It's true, going to fixed gear renders a more versatile and sturdy landing gear
but the original retractable gear works fine if a stiffer than called for
crossbar is used and if the latches are really secure.  My first KR was built
by Harold Ziggenfield, a Convair engineer.  He built two or three KR's, then
built a Barracuda . . . he loved building and did something to make the
retractable gear secure.  In learning to fly the KR I tested that gear to it's
very limits . . . sliding sideways down the runway at Oceanside the first time
I flew it.  There were other stressful events during my ownership of that KR
and the gear never faltered.  Whatever Ziggy did with the latch mechanism
worked really well, so it can be done.

I'd never recommend the original gear if one is just starting off but if the
gear is already in place . . . stiffen that crossbar and goof-proof the latches.
