In theory you're idea to use an XDP forwarded to the Phantom Extension should work and could be a good work-around. I'll have to try it and let you know.
As to whether or not the -4 will allow it...well, it's supposed to. According to the TD185 documentation the allowed destinations for a DID call are: extension, external pager, modem, extension group and phantom extension. In fact, when programming 137/138 (the day/night DID destinations extensions) you can enter almost any extension including voice mail numbers, phantom numbers and floating numbers (except for the DISA floating numbers). Since this all pre-dates the -5 by quite a bit, it should be functional in a -4. On the other hand, a bug fix in the -5 is always a possibility.... However, I was checking out almost any other possibility and may have a clue as to what is going wrong. It doesn't seem to be my setup, but I do think there is a bug in the firmware. I had only been doing a partial setup of the DID; that is, I only added the phantom extension buttons to 1 phone and only added a couple of DID destination addresses into the table. I didn't want to spend too much time entering all the data until I was sure I was programming it correctly and it was working properly. On a hunch, I added the phantom extension buttons to a second phone. Since I was getting a busy signal with only 1 phone "connected" to the phantom extension, perhaps the software was incorrectly assuming that no phantom buttons were available when routing a DID call? Sounded unlikely, but it was worth a try. Suddenly, it started to work. Well, sort of. The phantom buttons on the second phone seem to work right, and I don't get a busy signal when calling in. Unfortunately, the first phone still seems to be working strange. At one point it received the DID call on the phantom, but now it isn't working....very strange. I will let you know what I discover.
