Thanks everyone!  It's kind of fun seeing all of the different points of
view on a simple question
like this.  And everyone agreed that what I did would work fine too.

I had used a straight through 25' long Cat5e cable, and At&t finally told me
today that the smart jack was bad, and that once they replaced it - all is
well.

And - I didn't look like an idiot either!  Sometimes a blind squirrel finds
a nut...  :)

Umm, no.  A crossover cable in the network world is one where 1 & 2 get
swapped with 3 & 6...
