Thanks everyone! It's kind of fun seeing all of the different points of view on a simple question like this. And everyone agreed that what I did would work fine too.
I had used a straight through 25' long Cat5e cable, and At&t finally told me today that the smart jack was bad, and that once they replaced it - all is well. And - I didn't look like an idiot either!
