In general, consistency with Excel is good. Not because it's technically better, but because users who cannot find a certain function just because of a different (probably better!) name will conclude that OpenOffice does not have that function.
I am unable to find Microsoft's translations for the "...B" text functions, but I envision some "....MULTIPLE.BYTE" construct...
