You prefer Spanish or Russian, others maybe different languages. ;-) At
the end we cannot know this and therefore IMHO we shouldn't try to guess
which language selection is best for them.
Another argument against this is that it would increase the complexity
of the download scripting for a minimal user benefit.
3. Comparing the 'accepted language' string to available subsites, a
visitor could be invited to
participate in more languages. In my supposed case above, not only for
Hungarian translation,
but for Spanish and Russian too, if they are not available at the time
of the visit.
This has nothing to do with the download. We should clearly separate
this from the download scripting.
Also here: Don't increase the complexity.
Of course you can try something in this direction for the homepage
and/or the NL webpages.
4. Based on 'accepted language' too, I could offer a 'calculated'
solution. If 'accepted language' string
contains only 'pt' and 'en', but no Portugese translation exist, I could
offer pt-br which is closer to pt than English. As far as I suppose.
This is maybe working for some similar or releated languages but not for
all. See point #2.
5. Checking the availability of native subsite and native downloadable
program could give more precise invitaton or welcome text for the visitor.
6. Using a counter field in this csv file makes it easy to order
languages not by alphabetical name but by usage, delivering a bit faster
performance in searching for the visitor's 'accepted language'.
OK, I give up. ;-)
Please don't get me wrong. Don't see this as negative critique.
It's just that I don't see a connection from your initial request "sort
the languages alphabetically in the drop-down-box" with your new points
above. I don't see these points as an improvement that all users could
benefit from.
For me these are two different things. However, for the homepage or the
several NL webpages it could be indeed an improvement.
