This is going to be a great opportunity for us. :)

Affordable PC: We will have 2^nd generation coming out soon so those units you saw are actually not available. I will let you know when the new units are available. I think we can have some as purchase as you suggested and some units as “gift” if we can bundle it with events like Open Office and moodle training.

That's some great news. I especially like the "gift" idea ;-)

This type of support will make a big difference in promoting IT use in countries with very little available funding.

Anyway, We are looking for an important event that will be tentatively organized at the Melia Hotel, in Hanoi, on Dec 6th, 2006 :

THE 4th CONFERENCE ON OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE IN VIET NAM, organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Vietnam.

and where we have been invited to set-up demonstrations of Open source softwares solutions.

This is on the same day, or a bit after, the planned release date for OpenOffice 2.1. I've been warned not to assume that date is set in concrete, but we can still hope we will have workable builds of OOo 2.1 in Vietnamese by then.

I will log our translation issue today: that means I will formally submit our completed strings to the OpenOffice.org project. We will have testing builds available very soon, which we will test actively up until the official release. Further testing and user feedback after the release will result in updates to the translation at the first point release (e.g. OOo 2.1.1).

I don't know what technical issues we will encounter during testing: Vietnamese is famous for breaking supposed "complete" Unicode support, and there are input issues on various systems. We will keep you updated.

Regardless, I think we can plan for workable builds, if not the complete release, by the date of this event in Vietnam. :)

I think that event will be the perfect place to have a show for OpenOffice.org, especially in a Vietnamese computing environment, embedded with Linux solutions like Ubuntu and e.g. Hacao Linux (http://hacao.net/). We intend to distribute Live Linux CDs (Ubuntu and Hacao) and OOo CDs (with the binaries for Linux, possibly Windows and some translated documentation on OOo)

It would be good if your systems could use as much localized software as possible: see our overall project page at <http://vnoss.net/ dokuwiki/doku.php?id=projects:l10n>. Most of these, we hope, would be in the standard releases.

If ever your 2nd generation computers are ready by that time, even one single prototype (as the stand won't be that big, I think) would do, that would be a perfect match to present Edubuntu in a multilingual environment (En, Fr, Vi), with OpenOffice.org in Vietnamese as well.

Yes, even one machine would make a big impression. Events like these are focal points for new ideas and adoption of new technology.
