This is almost the exact discussion I was in when Alien Swarm was released and 
people didn't play custom campaigns. Then without valve updates they stopped 
playing it all together. It's difficult to get a good team of players and ones 
that know the maps and even harder to get them to play that long. That's why 
people stick to stock campaigns -everyone knows the maps.

The return on the work you put into the campaign is what made me stop. Not
enough support/interest in custom campaigns for it to be worth it. I've
just be doing small UDK projects for the past year or so instead. By all
means don't let me discourage anyone with this, I lurk this mailing list
all the time but just wanted to chime in because that collaboration idea
sounds interesting, now that I'm working full time too.
