I have never personally used one, but in the obedience classes I attend, many of the people use a gentle leader on their dogs, and it seems to really work wonders and is much easier on the handlers. If you are not familiar with a gentle leader, it has a strap that goes over the dogs muzzle so that when the dog pulls, his head goes up and he will then have a tendency to stop pulling/sit. I don't think they can injure the dog at all, though I would check. It is actually more gentle on the dog than a regular collar, I believe. The other thing, which you mentioned, would be a harness. I have been told to use the type that does not have a strap that goes around the neck, but rather only the chest and behind the legs. Check out the Sense-ible Harness at www.cleanrun.com I have been told that this is the best and cannot injure your dog's neck. I do not have a doodle; I am a wannabee, but I do have a clumber spaniel whom I take to obedience classes every week and I am thinking about getting this harness for her because I have the same neck fears as you. If you don't know, spaniels are very smart, but very stubborn, and clumbers are really strong! When she pulls, you better be ready! :-)
Anyway, food for thought and good luck with your Bailey boy!

Subject: [labradoodles] Leash Training
Hey All,
I posted here before when I had my labradoodle and as some of you know
Cody only lived to be 6 months old. That having been said we now
have a goldendoodle who is very dear but we can't control him on the
leash! He pulls like crazy and when we see other people or dogs he
jumps around and twists to get out of the collar. He loves other dog,
people and especially children. We've tried the method of stopping
when he pulls and waiting till he slacks on the leash and then treat
and praise. We tried turning and walking in the other direction and
when he comes up NEXT to us use treating and praise but still haven't
found a way to get him to stop. (Bailey is 12 mo. old, we got him at 6
months old.) When he pulls he strains so hard I'm afraid he's going
to choke himself or do damage to his throat. Does anyone have any
suggestions? We're thinking perhaps a harness of some sort....we're
open to ANY suggestions.....
Thanks,
Susan in Apex, NC
