What kind of coat does your dog have?  That will determine allot.

I have a couple of doodles with heavy fleeced coats that will matt if not brushed or kept shorter about 1.5 -2 inches in length all over.  Looks really cute......We just had to "skin" my one fleece girl as she was so matted it was awful her coat was around 4-6 inches at the time, especially her legs.  I find they matt really bad around their collars due to toe constand rubbing.

My groomer has become a doodle grooming pro...lol.....She suggests after brushing and before bathing to go over the coat with a 30 or 40 blade with a large COMB 1.5-2 inch MB attachment.  After bathing and drying and brushing you can then do the comb again and trim up around the face and legs with sizzors or thinning shears......She use to had sizzor them until she tried the comb and it does the same job in 1/2 the time.......either your dog was more matted than you thought or your groomer didn't want to deal with it.  Mine has taken up to 3 hours with a matted doodle.  Shorter and cute works great.......check out my dogs on my web site on the dams and sires pages(click on their small pic to open more and see them up close).....Kalie, Scarlett and even Rhett were all groomed by Laurie.

I'm looking for a set of clippers now.  Laube makes a good one and so does Andis.  Make sure it's 2 speed and high RPMs like 2000-4000.  Ebay has some resonably priced and dealers will give you a break if you buy combs and extra blades.  Most clippers come with a 10 blade.  You'll need to buy an aditional #30 or #40 blade to use with a LARGE comb set.........

Hi everyone! I'm new and had posted an introduction but never saw it
come through.

I live on Long Island and have a 5 month labradoodle named Zoey. She
had her first grooming today and I'm rather sad- she looks so... bald.
The groomer said she had some matting and she had to clip her closer
than she wanted to.

I brush her every day and was aware of a little matting on her legs
that I was working on, but I didn't think it would be necessary to do
what the groomer did. To avoid this in the future, I think I would
just rather groom her myself. Any advice on the best way to learn? I'm
not completely ignorant. I used to clip horses for shows- I just have
no experience with high maintenance dogs.

Best,
Susan
