We called them "gym shoes". Girls' gym shoes were white (and, if I recall correctly, low cut like oxfords). Boy's gym shoes were black with white soles and a white circle on the ankle, and ankle high, like baby shoes or work shoes. I had to wear boy's gym shoes, hence my uncertainty as to the exact nature of girl's shoes.
