aw, poor Ben. My BC Chipper would have been hiding under the back porch..I
think it's their ears, thunder or other loud reports hurt them.
Well, what about the so-called gun-dogs? The ones, supposedly, bred for hunting? They have those floppy ears which partially block the sound... Our Andy (long deceased but still much missed) was an Irish Setter, and must have had some of the "hunting drill" bred into him since, as a puppy, he used to "set" both my fox-fur hat and mmy rabbit-fur coat (telling him both had already been hunted to death once didn't seem to make any diff). His hearing didn't seem to be any better than mine -- we heard Severn's car getting close to the driveway and slowing down at precisely the same time... But... Come hunting season (commonplace around here)? Thunder? 4th of July fireworks? Mama help! Save yourself who can! Run for your life!
His favourite hidey-hole was the laundry room, behind the heater (never mind that he couldn't quite fit; he couldn't fit on my lap either, but he wasn't a dog easily deterred by realities <g>), in the basement. Quite sensible, actually, in case of thunder, being the lowest point of the house and not likely to be struck, but useless for the rest...
