At work, where I have a Windows machine, almost every time I ask it
to shut down, it doesn't really and I have to hit the power switch.
We're supposed to leave them off overnight, for power consumption and
security reasons.
So every morning, I get that lovely "scanning the world" message. I
cope by stopping on the way in to fill the electric hotpot, coming to
my desk and turning on the machine, and taking the teapot back to the
kitchenette to fill it. Sometimes if it shut down properly, I get to
see what's in my mail before the water's hot, but not always!
