We've had two alarming fires involving cigarettes in Poole in the past few days.
In the first a motorist threw a lighted cigarette end out of his car window and it landed on the back seat of a car going in the opposite direction. The rear windows of the car that got burnt were open because of the hot weather. The driver saw flames in her rear-view mirror, and got out just in time. The fortunate thing was that she didn't have her toddler with her. He'd have been strapped into the toddler seat in the rear of the car. The second one was a penthouse flat in one of the expensive areas of Poole. It's thought that a seagull picked up a still-lit cigarette end in his claws and flew off with it, dropping it on the veranda of the penthouse a few yards away, which was completely gutted. Fortunately no-one was at home. Fire investigators confirmed that the fire started on the veranda, and from the evidence are convinced that this was what happened. So it's not only forest fires that are started by discarded cigarettes. Jean in Poole, where it's hotted up again.
