My button box is spread across two smallish boxes because it's easier to
find a suitable button from a smallish pile than from a large one. Only
problem is that all the button are jumbled up, so matching buttons can be in
both boxes.

I keep a few beautiful Victorian buttons which belonged to my grandmother in
my "box of treasures". That contains things like an invitation to my
wedding, a silk embroidered postcard that my maternal grandfather sent my
grandmother from France during the first world war, the menu from the first
formal dinner I attended, and so on.

The last time I needed a button was when the clasp on my favourite handbag
(purse) broke. It couldn't be mended or replaced, so I plaited some thin
round black elastic to make a firm but stretchy loop for the flap. Then I
sewed a suitable shanked button to the body of the bag, with another behind
it, inside, so that the stitches didn't pull through the leather. It's now
still useable with a very firm closure.

Lynn, it's never too late to start a button box. Just cut the buttons off
any garment before you throw it out or use it for a duster.
