Yes, you can get british programs on US format but a US produced DVD will NOT play on a UK machine and vice versa.
This is something you need to remember when buying discs. You can get DVD players with an extra chip in them that play both US and European. As a matter of interest, Oz DVDs play on UK machines - not something I had thought of as essential knowledge a year ago but with the Aussie in the house this has proved useful. If you have a pc you can change the country setting on that to play another region but most pcs only allow you to do this 3 or 4 times then it becomes permanent - so not worth doing.
