He's on a roll, after all those weeks of being deprived of the puter...
:)
Dear All,
Having typed that long epistle yesterday, I realised last night that
I'd forgotten to tell you all about the REAL purpose of this trip to
the Northern Territory - that of documenting new archaeological sites
and revisiting old ones. Viv and I have had varying success.

There is a site not far from where we're camped which we discovered 18
months ago and being Wet Season then only got a limited look at it. So
we spent a day there a couple of weeks ago and did a thorough surface
collection of spear points, scrapers, cores etc. The site was very
interesting, but at the same time disappointing, in that it covered a
large area - some 5 acres - but the flakes and tools were sparsely
scattered. The interesting part came in recording the various types of
stone used, which had obviously been traded from other areas we know -
some over 100km away. The best points were actually in the debris
right beside the road which must have been built right through the
middle of the site.

We were also able to document a similar site which is on the land
abutting Viv's boundary. This one had been recently burned which made
things far easier to see.

Later this week we're off to one of my favourite spots down on the
Daly River. There is a sort of a beach there which is over 300 metres
long and is comprised entirely of the most magificent jasper in shades
from clear, through cream to orange and blood red. Nearly every piece
has been worked by the Aborigines over the past 7000 years or so and
numerous spear points and knives will be found. It's the one place I
always have to be very careful of dehydration though as it's very easy
to get carried away and forget time as the hours slip by. It's not as
simple as popping over to the river's edge for a drink either as it's
chokka with huge salt water crocodiles!!

Have also found a magnificentin tactskull of a wild boar complete
with tusks which will look great mounted on the fence near my buffalo
skull when I get home.
Love
David
